On Monday night, Kirk took me thrifting. and I thought I would share my experience and joy I encountered while we explored a couple second hand stores in our area.
In a little under two weeks, we are moving to a new apartment in Kitchener. We've been sorting through our things and making donations to Good Will. Kirk has been handling the packing and transporting the boxes to the storage unit.
I had a rough weekend and he wanted to cheer me up and offered treasure hunting as a treat for both of us. It's been difficult but when we go to the thrift store, I try not to go into the book section because my library has been packed and stored already. Well, I couldn't resist, I made my way to the religious/spiritual section of book and found a Dream Decoder Journal and two spell books.
We found more IKEA purple dinner plates, we now have a set of six! I found some cute canisters for our kitchen. I couldn't resist the vegetable designed jar and these three mix-n-match pink jars. I hope to find more like these when I thrift again... after I move to my new apartment. There's a cool grocery store downtown where you can bring in your own containers to eliminate waste. So we're restoring our jars and containers to do our part.
I had expressed to Kirk that I needed new shoes. I had wished that I could find flats in every color or at least the basic colors to match my clothing. My favorite walking shoes had a hole in the toe and my flats were hurting my feet, I didn't have sandals and I couldn't afford new ones. On Monday evening, I found what I was looking for and some bonus ones. I found a pair of Aldo sandals, two pairs of slides (black & pink), a pair of sneakers, a pair of dress shoes, and three pairs of walking shoes. The total for 8 pairs of shoes from the second hand store was $45.42 - - - when I bought my last brand new pair of shoes it was around fifty dollars.
Kirk found a roll of wallpaper for our new apartment. I envision it in our bedroom; because it's one roll it may be enough for one wall.
I love thrift shopping for so many reasons. The joy of finding the treasure you wanted or wished for. The lower cost vs buying brand new. The fact that you're helping your environment by reusing products. There are some hard parts to second hand shopping too; noise is a factor (especially over the holiday seasons or back to school). I found my solution and that is that I either have my loops or bring my headphones and hide into my playlists.
